Environment, Health & Safety
Hamilton Sundstrand strives to be the safest, healthiest aerospace and industrial company with the smallest environmental footprint on the planet.
Our environmental goals include absolute reductions in the greenhouse gas emissions, air pollutant emissions, water consumption, chemicals discharged to water and waste generation associated with the production of our products. Through our Green Products Program, we seek to minimize the hazardous substances and packaging associated with our products while maximizing their energy efficiency. Between 2006 and 2008, Hamilton Sundstrand achieved the following absolute reductions across our manufacturing facilities while experiencing a 24 percent increase in revenues:
• 6 percent decrease in greenhouse gas emissions
• 10 percent decrease in air emissions
• 5 percent decrease in water consumption
• 7 percent decrease in chemicals discharged to water
• 5 percent decrease in waste generation
The health and safety of our employees is of the utmost importance at Hamilton Sundstrand. With strong management support and grassroots employee involvement, Hamilton Sundstrand is striving to be an injury-free workplace. Efforts to obtain ISO 14001, OSHA Voluntary Protection Program (VPP), and/or OSHAS 18001 at our facilities worldwide are helping to continually improve the working environment for our employees. Between 2006 and 2008, our injury rate decreased by over 10 percent to well below the industry average.
Hamilton Sundstrand's efforts to continually improve EH&S performance have been recognized by a number of organizations. For successfully participating in the 2009 Earth Day Commuter Challenge, Hamilton Sundstrand in Windsor Locks, Conn., received an award from the Connecticut Department of Transportation. The European Agency for Safety and Health at Work awarded Hamilton Sundstrand the Healthy Workplaces award for our plans on risk assessment in the European Union.
